Calbiga Bridge retrofitting completed two months early; Heavy vehicles now allowed

CATBALOGAN CITY – In a major boost to regional logistics and local mobility, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed Phase 1 of the Calbiga Bridge retrofitting project two months ahead of schedule.

DPWH Region VIII Director Engr. Edgar B. Tabacon, accompanied by 2nd District Engineer Raymond Jay R. Panlilio, personally inspected the structure recently to assess the portal shoring works. These structural supports were expedited following a directive from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and a site visit by DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon last February, aiming to resolve the long, costly detours previously required for heavy motorists.

Effective June 19, 2026, the bridge has transitioned to a two-way traffic scheme for vehicles weighing up to 15 tons. In a significant upgrade, heavy vehicles up to 30 tons are now permitted to cross under a one-way scheme between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM. This development eliminates the need for truck drivers to bypass through the lengthy Wright–Taft–Basey route to reach Tacloban, significantly reducing logistics costs and travel time.

During the visit, Calbiga Mayor Red Nacario and Vice Mayor Eva Castillo expressed their gratitude for the project's early completion. Mayor Nacario also used the opportunity to advocate for the construction of a permanent footbridge to replace the aging hanging bridge used by students and teachers of Calbiga National High School.

"The safety of our learners is a major priority," Mayor Nacario stated, noting that a modern footbridge is essential for uninterrupted access to education.
