Thank you. Your blogspot: http://nelsonpetilla.blogspot.com did enlightened me a little bit. Of course, the only new building that is evident in the new city of Catbalogan is the mall (or is it? does the mayor owns it?) The DPWH, Engineering, Hospital, the Hall of Justice etc. are old buildings that need some remodeling, or maybe repainting. Catbalogan looks cleaner at least from the pictures. Hopefully you'll keep it that way.

I've also visited another private webpage www.batch2006.com I am happy about some really good developments, but the basic commodities should still be given the prime importance. Do we have clean drinking water? Do we have good drainage system? Do we have jobs for our poor families in Catbalogan, so they don't have to take chances in the big cities,.if they succeed.. it's well and good...if they fail.. then well have something for them to fallback on.

Let's tie up with some organizations who knows canning and food preservation, that is probably where we will succeed. Let's concentrate on what we have, like fish and coconut, and will go from there. Let's not do so many little things, and just fail. Let's minimize corruption if we really can't put an end to it. We will all die anyway, so why do we need to accumulate wealth from corruption, if we can't even bring it to our graves.. lets use our money or the people's money to save lives.. then people will always remember you and the good you've done from generation to generation.

If a chinese businessman/mayor can change Catbalogan's destiny..so be it...I will continually be an advocate for a cleaner/corruption less leadership/government. A Catbaloganon, a Filipino an American doesn't really matter to me, I am pro-life and everything that goes with the principle. Good housing, good food (not just rice and fish) and good clothing.. then and only then I'd say AMEN. Life goes on..and I am a BELIEVER.

The cityhood of Catbalogan has long been the dream of many Catbaloganons. It is fitting to thank the Congress and the President for making that dream possible. Some people argue that Catbalogan does not deserve the title of being a city. They have some good points especially if they try to define a city using the measurement of highly-developed cities in the Philippines like Manila and Cebu. But the reality is the fact that the people of Catbalogan will definitely reap more rewards being a resident of a city. The internal revenue allotment (IRA) is higher for cities than municipalities and there's hope that the higher IRA will help finance the needed infrastructure projects to alleviate the sorry state of the municipality.

Congratulations Catbalogan for being awarded as the second city in the province of Samar. May development slowly trickle to the enjoyment of the majority of the people.

Nelson Petilla's work (nelsonpetilla.blogspot.com) evokes some positive sides of Catbalogan. There is more work to be done in Catbalogan. But, Catbalogan's success is solely dependent on the people who comprise the city. Our hope is for Catbalogan to be a shining glory in Samar.

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our loving brother, Atty. Manuel "Boy" Cuna-Aclo. He passed away under the grace of Our Lord on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at Lung Center, Quezon City, Philippines.

He will best be remembered for his generosity, great courage, sincerity, hardwork and as a brilliant lawyer, a dear friend, a devoted husband, a doting father and a loving brother.

Catbalogan is now a city with no safe drinking water, bad roads, a lot of undisciplined "paragtrycicle", dirty roads, notorious politicians (OMIGOSH), mag angso nga mga sinehan, dirty resorts (is Guinsorongan considered a resort?) To Mr. Pandopo:

The kangaroo court system in the communist movement particularly within the NDF-CPP-NPA realm is nothing but kangaroo. A kangaroo court or trial tries to put legal semblance to an otherwise mock trial that denies the accused of his right to answer the charges hurled against him. It is nothing but a "show trial" because the outcome has already been decided even before the accused was heard. It is a sham proceeding because the judge/s is/are impartial and prejudiced to the accused. Thus, the extra-judicial killings of people is in itself a perpetuation of this concept.

The legal maxim on the innocence of the accused unless proven otherwise is not observed in the kangaroo system of justice. The "Great Purge" of Stalin to eliminate his enemies, whom he labeled as "enemies of the people," was actually an off-shoot of the kangaroo trials that he organized. So, to expect the communist movement to listen to evidences is punch on the moon so to speak. This kind of justice should be condemned the same way we condemn the extra-judicial killings of activists or the frontliners of the communist movement. Without due process, justice won't be served.

The CPP/NPA via Fr. Salas has already issued a statement taking responsibility in the killing of the late Mayor Astorga. I would like to pose some questions to the NPA.

How was your kangaro court able to arrive at a death sentence? Was the late Mayor afforded a chance to defend himself by presenting evidence? Even in our legal penal code system, cases of great magnitude goes all the way to the supreme court for review! We are dealing with lives here...as the saying goes "political power comes out from the barrel of a gun" that’s the leftists/mao tsetong principle. I believe only our Creator has the right to take away life!

These killings by left and right will only further erode our people’s faith in life!

The spate of violence that already shook Samar even a month before the start of the local election period should be investigated thoroughly because this will escalate into uncontrollable chaos. Cong. Figueroa's request for the COMELEC to intercede (see Inquirer report) is laudable and being one of the major players in Samar's politics, he is among those few who have insider knowledge of what's going on in Samar.

It is open knowledge that goons cross Samar and Masbate during election season. The hired mercenaries cause a lot of disturbances to the electoral process. What's happening in the second district is not even close to what's going on in the first district. The rift between Cong. Uy and Ex-Cong. Tuazon before claimed an unprecedented number of lives. If Abra is known for its messy elections, Samar would soon come in second.

The people should be vigilant and condemn violence. The upcoming royal battle of the Rep. Uy-Rep. Figueroa tandem in one hand against the Gov. Tan-Mayor Grey alliance on the other hand would cause so much trouble. We just hope that the COMELEC would soon act fast to stop the nonsense bloodshed. The trouble is there would be a possibility of non-alligned ordinary citizens being victimized by the escalating violence.

First of all, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Astorga family for the sudden and untimely demise of mayor BENITO ASTORGA.

As a Daramnon, my sanity could still not comprehend as to why mayor Benito deserves such treacherous, cowardly, and unjust actions carried out by "principled" organizations. Re: Slaying of Benito Astorga

I would like to ask help and call the attention of Cong. Cata Figueroa to solve the killing of Mayor Astorga not only because Daram falls under his district but the good Cong. hails from Bagacay, Daram. Certainly he knows what's happening in Daram politically. I am into absolute belief that this is another political killing since Benito is unbeatbale in Daram, and the only way to beat him perhaps, they thought is to get rid of him.

The incumbent Vice Mayor who will be running for Mayor next election is Bartlolome Figueroa (any relations to the Cong?)

I am therefore asking him to use his power and clout to solve this gruesome crime and to bring to justice the real mastermind of this cowardice act.

I agree that the killing of Benito Astorga needs to be condemned. However, the posting in the Discussion Forum bothers me in that it lists a litany of the late Mayor's "sins" against the people. If there's truth to this, it makes the reader conclude that politics was not behind this dastardly act. To Salentes and Morales and others who have jumped the gun as to imply that the mayor's political enemies perpetrated this crime, please do not subject this incident to trial by publicity, even though no names were mentioned. As you always say, let justice prevail.
