Application to the 9th National Youth Parliament is on
“We need your voice!
Join us usher in change," said NYC Commissioner Gio Tingson
Thursday, marking the opening of the applications to the 9th
Parliament of Youth Leaders.
With the theme,
“Revolutionizing Youth Development,” the parliament aims to
formulate policy recommendations to address youth issues in
the country. These recommendations are then lobbied to
government leaders to be considered as proposed bills and
administrative policies. It is important to note that during
the event, participants also get to share ideas and gain
valuable insights and networks to aid them in their youth
development efforts.
Commissioner Tingson,
who heads this year’s NYP National Organizing Committee, said
that this gathering is the perfect platform for all Filipino
batas o polisiya. If you want change in the government – in
our society – this is a great place to start. Ang Kabataang
Filipino mula sa lahat ng rehiyon at sektor ay inaanyayahan ng
NYC na sumali at makilahok.”
The Commission is
also revamping the conduct of the parliament, making it more
inclusive and youth-friendly. “We’ll do away with cosmetics
like formal clothing and focus on the substance. You can show
up in your jeans and rock star shirt, as long as active
participation and involvement is there,” said Commissioner Gio.
Started in 1996, the
NYP is slated to be held on the 1st week of May 2012. An
estimate of two hundred (200) youth leaders representing
different sectors and regions are expected to participate in
this event.

DepEd
sets early registration day on January 29
TACLOBAN CITY – The
Department of Education is set to conduct an Early
Registration Day in public schools this coming January 29 for
first-time Kindergarten, Grade 1, and First Year enrollees.
Dr. Ronilo Al Firmo,
Tacloban City Division Superintendent, informed that this
initiative is also hoped to help achieve DepEd’s Millennium
Development Goal (MDG) in education.
With the theme
Makapag-aral ay Karapatan Mo, Magpalista Ngayong Enero, the
early registration aims to ensure the enrollment of 5- and
6-year-olds in Kindergarten and Grade 1, respectively.
It will also
guarantee the registration of soon-to-be elementary graduates
in the high school of their choosing.
Furthermore, this
nationwide activity will help DepEd, local government units (LGUs),
parents, teachers, school administrators, and other education
stakeholders to be better prepared for the upcoming opening of
classes in June.
Lastly, this also
serves as an education intervention to avoid or lessen
students from discontinuing their schooling.
From January 10 to
January 20, the first stage of this advocacy campaign called
Child and Youth Find Activities is to be implemented.
School
representatives with the help of barangay officials have
already started conducting home visits to prospective
enrollees. Street visits are also being done to profile of-age
street children who should be enrolled in kindergarten,
elementary or high school this June.
School officials
will designate at least 3 Registration Centers within the
school grounds to facilitate early enrollment on January 29.
