The comment posted by Mr. Bystander against the article of Mr. Rutor is again another slap against his (Bystander's) own face. Aren't fish caught by their own mouth? Mr. Bystander's usual contempt against other people is evident in his comment but this time it's his antics that gave him in for some grilling.

Here's why. While castigating the writer of the article using his usual "polished" English, Mr. Bystander missed the point when he misspelled "disseminate" by writing "desiminate." What a dismal performance by a critic who thinks highly of his grammar and lexicon. Come on, twenty five years in the US hasn't made you better than the rest of us here in the province of Samar. Besides, you are not paying a single centavo or penny (for your American connection) to read the articles of Samarnews.com. In fact, this forum while in effect a "newspaper" is not selling its news items for a fee so no amount of pressure requiring the moderator of this site to edit every single write-up would hold water.

If you are again agitated by the subject of the article, attack the subject matter based on its merits or demerits and not merely circle in on technicalities. Substance is always heavier than form, right? Well, that rule only applies to people who have substance, right? You've been reading the articles here in Samarnews.com for a good number of times and why all of a sudden pick on Rutor's article. I am just glad to read those articles and I know that some of them, even those authored by learned men, need some editorial touches but I better focus on the issues presented and not the way they are presented lest I be imposing myself as better than the rest.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the dumbest of them all? To Mr. Bystander, look at your own image first before casting stones against other mortals. The title "editor-in-mischief" is right for you. This is hilarious, really! You just made my day!

"Re Congressman Uy's role in the recent police appointments"

It’s a pity that politics is ruling the day in Samar...etsapwera ang public service, rule of law, and what is right, than wrong. It doesn’t take a genius to interpret that news....one is probably coincidence, but two is what? I mean does lightning really strikes twice in one place?

Tsk ....tsk...it’s a pity....so Calbayog has now sold out to "Uy"...oy...ano na ba ang nangyayari dyan? Just by the words "Uy" and the politics involve....the Calbayog people have sold out.... it’s a pity...and hopeless?

I could not help but squirm in my seat when I read Rommel Rutor's item re Congressman Uy's role in the recent police appointments (news). Upon seeing words like "did manipulated" and "creped", I didn't even bother to finish the story as its substance would have gotten lost in all the grammatical mess. When words don't sound right to the ear, you can be sure something is wrong. Doesn't Samar News have an editor who reviews all articles before they are put into print? This website is an excellent medium to desiminate information from the province but when poorly written articles make one cringe, sayang naman.

I think I'm right in someways and here's the excellent proof of what I posted last May 9. Lope de Vega High School are showing to us that their energy and time are not wasted but rather use it in a smart ways. Be self efficient and productive and willing to sacrifice whatever it takes and awesome result will follow. And another good news, Pinabacdao, Samar got a grant from the Worldbank. Again based on my comments posted last May 9 on the line that says resources will follow. Let's focus on the positive side of our lives and there's always hope and as the saying goes "there's a light at the end of the tunnel". A great thing indeed is at the horizon.

It has been 20 years since I been back home and it was wonderful feeling beside my sickness because it was so hot that my body cannot afford the heat, but other than that I was glad to be home the beauty of my City and the people and of course my family and friends I was glad to see them. Hopefully in five years I'll be able to go home again with my husband to be..GOD BLESS TO ALL...

In Unity, there’s Progress and Development!

“Poor Samar HS Rich in Test Scores" (news) says the headlines in most Daily newspapers across the country.

Elating as it may be, still majority of Filipinos looked it the other way around. A lot of critiques that tells us doomsday stories propped out. And it’s far more than the optimistic minds that we need to build a better tomorrow. That’s the true nature of Filipino society, no wonder where we are now.

As I quote Benjamin Franklin; "In free governments the rulers are the servants and the people their superiors and sovereigns." The ultimate powers in a society, therefore, rest in the people themselves, and they should exercise those powers, either directly or through representatives, in every way they are competent and that is practicable.

Now, do we want to improve our way of life? Sure everybody does. How? Simply by learning the way successful people/community does. Take for example the feat earned by a “Poor, Mountain-people of Lope De Vega in Northern Samar. A fifth–class municipality beating the odds and gaining for themselves pride and honor for their small, unknown town. They accomplished such feat not by whimpering, not by constantly clamoring in the streets, not by pointing-fingers, but by simply, understanding their goals and giving their own share of sacrifices.

Lope Lope De Vega HS exemplifies the prosperity that peace and harmony in a community can bring. They maybe lacking in teachers and classrooms but their teachers did not failed their students. They did not join demonstrations in the streets. Instead, they sacrificed for the well-being of their students. A classic example of how public-servants should be. Comparing them to some of the ‘know-all’ teachers here in metro-manila will reveal the sad plight of our education system. Where some of the teachers even prioritize attending demonstrations rather than caring for their flock. They accused almost everyone in the continuous degrading of the quality of education in our country except themselves. No wonder that even an ill-equipped, but positively driven educators of our youths in the far-flung province can beat the more equipped and better supported schools here in the metro.

Their parents, likewise contributes their fair share. They pooled their skills and little money to make repairs of the classroom, new tables and other improvements in the school the ‘pintakasi’ way.  The Local Government Unit also gave their share that greatly contributes to the successful feat. What a great sight to watch! A true example of a government for the people and by the people.

It is more of learning and accepting our priorities for us to focus on what we desire to achieve. If we want to educate our youth, the future of this country, Let us do so by doing what we sworn to do us public servants. And sacrificing more will be of great service to our youth.

Kudos to the dedicated School Principal, The public-service oriented teachers, the supportive PTCA members and the Leadership of Lope De Vega LGU. May your tribe increase!

Re "Proud to be Pinoy, Proud to be Waray" and Mr. Nelson Bohol's achievements as a world class animator as seen beautifully in animation films such as "Finding Nemo", "Cars", et al. I can't help but feel proud to be Filipino, Catbaloganon and a graduate of Samar National High School (formerly Samar High School.)

I've been in the Big Apple for over 20 years now, but I've never ceased to be a Filipino Catbaloganon at heart. Indeed, it's true that you can take a Catbaloganon out of the Philippines, but you'll never take the Philippines out from a Catbaloganon, or any Filipino for that matter. Congratulations Mr. Bohol for a job well done!

Proud to be Pinoy, proud to be Waray

Also in town is Nelson "Rey" Bohol, supervising production artist of Pixar Animation Studios, whose latest work is Cars (distributed by Buena Vista International through Columbia Pictures), opening in Metro Manila on Thursday, June 8. Among his other works are Anastasia, Titan A.E., Finding Nemo and The Incredibles, all hit animation flicks.

Like Dante Basco, Nelson is proud to be Pinoy and – listen Boy Abunda, Bibeth Orteza, Nonoy Zuniga and my other kababayan from Samar and Leyte – proud to be Waray.

I learned that Nelson is also Samareño when I had a brief chat with him yesterday.

He was born in Catbalogan, Western Samar, studied elementary grades at Hinabangan, also in Western Samar, and finished high school at the Samar National High School in Catbalogan (where Tessie Tomas comes from).

He took up B.S. Architecture at the MLQU in Manila.

Nelson is the classic poor boy who made good – in America at that.

"I was born poor," said Nelson. "My dad died when I was five years old and it was my mom who raised me. I really loved sketching even as a kid, even if I had to improvise because we couldn’t afford to buy paper and other drawing materials."

His big break came in l986 when an American company hired him here to create short animation films for exhibits and product presentations. In the US, he first worked with Fox Network and then moved to Pixar where he has been working for seven years now.

In Cars, Nelson designed Radiator Springs, the idyllic town where the hero car, Lightning McQueen, detoured and learned that "life’s a journey, not the finish line."

"Even if I now live in America," insisted Nelson, "I remain a Filipino at heart."

It shows in his works. In Finding Nemo, for example, Nelson designed the aquarium complete with a bahay kubo and accessories inspired by the Mayon Volcano.

You see, you can take a boy out of the Philippines (out of Samar) but you can never take the Philippines (or Samar) out of him.
