Maupay nga patron
To all new and old time throng
Give my regards to Salug District
Say I miss their merriment that's electric

Start the parade march around town again
Let John Philip Sousa's music begin
For everyone to rejoice
In happy song and gentle voice

With festive music in the air
And sweet aroma from special fare
Every house displays bright ruffles and RP flag
From Obanon to Sawang and Patag

Church bells will ring
To remind everyone to bring
High spirit and thanksgiving for the patron
To honor San Bartolomeo's throne

So maupay nga patron
Let's celebrate and eat some chetsaron
And if there's no more crunchy toron
Just bring out sweet pulvoron.

Usa ako nga Samarnon, natawo sa Calbayog... Nakabisita ako sa Catbalogan durante san Samar Day Celebration. Tuguti ako pagpahamtang san akon ubos nga panan-aw san nakalabay nga dako nga selebrasyon para kunta san aton Tuna nga Natawhan, ug para man san aton mga kabugtu-an dinhi sa Isla san Samar.

Kamakaruruyag gad san mga kirit-on, labi na gud an mag-anyag nga mga kandidata san Mutya han Samar.  Diri gud naton mahililikaw nga maghusay gud man an aton mga kababayin-an dinhi sa Samar.  Kahusay unta nga nagpapakita diri la san aton pan-gawas nga hulagway, kundi kahusay man kunta liwat san aton mga kalag, ug panmurubu-ot, labi na gud an aton mga kabatasanan nga nahimat-an sugad san kamagnanong; kamatanalahuron; kamaglimpyo sa panlawas, panimalay, ug kalibungan; an pagrespeto sa kada tagsa; labi na gud an pagsarig ug pagtoo san aton Kamakagarahum...

Pero hain na daw la an kama-anyag san Samar?  San iya mga anak? Ug an kamabaysay sini nga aton Iroy nga Tuna?

Bisan ada man kunta an aton mga namumuno san aton mga bungto, labi na gud san aton Probinsiya - pero daw sugad sin mga gutom nga kaayaman an aton mga kabugtuan dida san may ginpanhatag nga panmeryenda an Kapitolyo san waray pa magtitikang an parada.  Akon nakikita an kagutom san Samar, diri la para sin usa ka adlaw nga pagpahuwas san kahapdos san ira mga tiyan, kundi ada an kagutom san ira mga nawong ug kalag daw sugad sin pira na ka anyos nga pag-antos sin kapobrehan!  An mapait pa gud sini, mayda pa pinili kun sino la an tatagan ug waray sistema sin maupay nga panhatag agud unta diri maipit an kalagsan ug kabataan nga nadadaug san mga magkusog pa ug igo la an mga pangidaron...

Nahibaro ak sadto nga daw sugad sin mga gutom nga kahayupan an mga tawo san magsaburak an Hepe sa Kapitolyo sin salapi dida sa prente san Kapitolyo mismo, pira na ka tuig an naglabay san sugad liwat sini nga selebrasyon...

Ungod man liwat nga mayda libre nga pagpa-arut - pagpagwapa ug pagpagwapo... Pero, nano an kahimtang san aton Samar Provincial Hospital?  Di ak ngani maruruyag nga sumulod kun singba ko magkasakit ak kay waray man ngani mga gamit san ira emergency room nga igo makaghatag sin emergency relief labi kun may nadidisgrasya.

Sumaka ak liwat pag-usyuso san Opisina san Gobernador sa Kapitolyo.  Kun sadto san una, may pagrespeto an nasulod siton nga Opisina, yana iba na an iya kahimtang!

Sano pa inabot an dako nga adlaw san selebrasyon san Samar Day, nakasulod ak sa Opisina san Gobernador mismo. Pero mayda didto usa nga empleyada nga mao kuno an tinapuran san Gobernadora, an ira gintatawag nga Madam Bebie - daw sugad siya an tag-iya san Opisina: didto siya nakarigo, nagliliwan, nagpapahusay kay sige man an iya hudhud san iya nawong dida pa gud sa lamesa san gobernadora, pati an iya pagkaon, dida mismo siton nga opisina, api na an iya pagpahuway kun umudto...

Sa gawas san Opisina san Gobernadora, kulang sin tawo - daw sugad sin opisina nga waray may naglilimpyo, waray katuhayan.  Mao la an nga opisina sa kapitolyo nga sugad sin ginpasagdan nala... Kamag-upay may san iba nga mga opisina san mga departamento kunta.  Kay nano nga angay maging modelo nga opisina daw sugad man sin waray nanginginano?

Damo an diri maaram san kabug-usan nga buruhaton.

Kahirayo pa san mga una nga namumo san aton Probinsiya nga mayda katuhayan ug maupay nga sistema bisan diri tanto masiring naton nga perperkto nga pamunuan.

Dapat naiiba kunta tungod kay usa nga maanyag nga babaye an aton namumuno san aton Probinsiya! Ada kunta an kamalimpyo san kapitolyo, upod na an kamalimpyo san mga opisina ug an kalibungan san iya pinamumunuan. Ada kunta an disiplina san iya mga empleyado.  Ada kunta an ngatanan nga maglaladawan san kamaanyag san Samar!

Haliputay gad la nga panahon an akon nahi-istar sa Catbalogan san nakalabay nga semana.

May maupay pa ba nga kabubuwason an Samar?  An kada-tagsa pa ba nga Samareño may pag-ugop san kabubuwason san iya tuna nga natawhan?  May dignidad pa ba an kada Samareño, labi na gud an aton mga namumuno san aton mga bungto? Ungod ba gud an ira ungara pagserbe san aton Probinsiya?

Kun aton la igbabale-waray an kun ano man nga nahitatabo sa aton kalibungan, waray kita katungod pag-ukoy dinhi.

Kun diri yana, sano pa man?  Kun diri kita, sino pa man?

Magpapagarong na la ba kita pirmi kun sino an may puder ug salapi? Ngan kun sino an diri pa gud taga dinhi sa aton?

Dear Sisa,

Thank you for your message.  It jolted me from my reverie about the hardships in Samar, and what Bishop Palma refers to as "the culture of fear and death" in our island.  Of course we know that these hardships is a matter of degree -- very intense and heightened in Samar, and probably less intense in other parts of the Philippines.  But we all know that wherever we are, the hardships, the pain, the anxiety, and the misery are there.

Anyway, we have remitted to Mr. Ray Gaspay and Ms. Christine Caidic an amount of more than P10,000.  This is the limos for the families of the victims of the firefight in Jiabong which resulted in the death of four Samarnon, including an 8-year old boy.  But apparently, it is difficult to look for the recipients of the limos because the families of those who died have moved from the barangay where the encounter happened.  They do not want to pay any attention to themselves anymore for fear that they are going to be killed also, even if they have not committed any crime. The limos is with Christine and Ray. The families of those who died did not even claim the bullet-ridden bodies of their sons, and a daughter.

A member of the Sigma Rho Fraternity, Atty. Domingo Lira, Jr. who is in America, contributed $120 to a limos fund also.  Atty. Lira is the fraternity brother of Senator Angara, Senator Joker Arroyo, and my friend the Senate Secretary, Atty. Oscar G. Yabes, among others.  Mr. Quintin Lambino Doroquez, originally from Catubig, and one of the most erudite Samarnons I have ever known, donated $50.  A friend from Catbalogan who is in New York and was my fellow alumni in the UP College of Public Administration, donated $30.  These donations I have remitted to the family of the late Constancio Calubid of San Andres, Villareal, Samar. If you remember, Constancio Calubid was beaten in front of his family of young children, hogtied, brought somewhere.  He was found 12 days later in the Villareal, Samar Bayanihan Road with two stab wounds to the stomach, one to the neck.

Of course, I will have to inform the Office of the President of the Philippines about these donations.  Our hearts go out not only to those who are considered "rebels".  Our hearts go out also to the innocent soldiers who have to offer their lives because of the orders of their superiors who report to civilian officials some of whom are so incompetent and so corrupt that you want to cry.

I will have to inform the Office of the President that it is not only to the poor Samarnons to whom we are giving our pathetic limos.  We have given to the elementary school in San Jose de Buan.  We constructed a comfort room for the children there, donated books and other school materials also.  Last Christmas, we Samarnons in the World Wide Web donated a small amount to the San Jose de Buan Elementary School so that they can have a happier Christmas Celebration.  We express our gratitude to Ms. Christine Caidic for helping us in these tabang to the future of Samar and the Philippines, the children in San Jose de Buan Elementary School. I hope that Christine’s sacrifices are not misconstrued by our people – the rebels and the soldiers alike  – who see danger in every shadow.

Even if we are Samarnons, we do not forget that we are also Filipinos. Hence, we have contributed to help some civic groups in Marbel, Cotabato in their projects to help the Lumads, the Muslims, and the poor Christians there; the children in Sulu and Tawi Tawi, the children in Hacienda Luisita; the disabled in Tahanan Walang Hagdanan; the children in Payatas where the UP Staff Chorale Society performed a mini concert last February 14, 2004 and to whom we dnated an amount for the microfinancing program of the RVM sisters in Payatas; and the children of Pingkian.

We have contributed to the shipment of books in a poor elementary school in Bacolod. And since our roots are from Villareal, Samar also, we helped in alleviating the hardships of the fire victims this year. We have also adopted two elementary schools in Villareal, in addition to providing an ABS-CBN ETV system to the Lamingao Elementary School.  I hope the school children are benefiting from that donation. Obviously, we are at the forefront of generating assistance to the Villareal Bayanihan Road Repair Project where the Villahanons from all over the world are doing what has never been done before in the history of the Philippines – reparing and cementing a public, 8-kilometer road without the help, as far as I know of the Samar Provincial Government and the National Government headed by the embattled President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Of course, we helped a lot in generating donations to the families of the 1,600 Filipinos who perished during the typhoon and the landslides in Luzon last November 2004.  In fact, as a Samarnon, I am proud to share the fact that the esteemed Consul General of San Francisco, the Hon. Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez, has appointed me to be a member of the "Philippine Relief and Assistance Group" which she chairs and is based in San Francisco, California.

I am sharing this with you Sisa so that our people cannot accuse us of favoring one group of Filipinos as against other groups, especially our soldiers who are paid by our taxes who might kill you on the basis of your name and your organizational affiliation alone without any investigation.  Of course, this is true also with their perceived enemies.

We are hoping Sisa that the leaders of our people, such as President Arroyo, the statesmen in our Congress such as Senator Pimentel to whom we in the Internet look to for guidance and inspiration, Jose Maria Sison and his National Democratic Front who have been waging this armed struggle for the past 36 years with no end in sight, the powerful generals in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the United Nations, the Roman Catholic Church, other religious groups, and the powers that be in America, and us Filipinos all over the world can have peace in our lifetime so that we can diminish our tears, our fear, our anxieties, and our hopelessness.

I hope your name, Sisa, will not evoke the tragic story of Basilio and Delfin and their mother Sisa during the days of Spanish oppression.

Padayon Sisa while blood flows in our veins.

Good day.  I usually surf the web to find out current events in the Philippines and your website caught my attention. It's very interesting. KUDOS!  Also, I've read an article mentioning a person's name (ROSENAIDA A. ROSALES).  I was wondering if she is the daughter of Judge Rosales from Calbayog City.  If so, would you provide my e-mail or home address to her?  She's my best buddy when we're in University of Santo Tomas!  Thanks so much!

Few months ago Prof. Torres suggested if you can publish in your website the name of the financial institution where one can remit financial assistance to the victims of military abuse in our province.  I believe a lot of Samarenos situated globally will take time to donate a small amount to help lighten up the load of our kababayan.  Thank you and more power.

More power to Cong. Catalino Figueroa for rallying behind the people of Samar.  I hope and pray for his success and safety in the struggle for peace in our province.  He is the only voice among the many voices in our local government who shows courage and proves to be a civil servant with a true love for his constituents.  Thank you Sir and God bless!

Hi there! I just want to ask assistance from all of you mga kababayan kong taga-Samar... we're featuring Western Samar in our weekly Wednesday program 'going places' at Sports Radio here in Manila and in our opening remarks to start the program, we usually greet the listeners using the place's/province's native dialect. Thanks a bunch!

Hi to all fellow Villahanon,

Advance happy fiesta diyan s atin, this coming August. In connection to the "bayanihan road" I really happy that someday the road will finish by helpning hand even by the small kids coz they know that the road will help them someday. I really like the method used by our Mayor: Boy Latorre. To accesss the farm product going to cities.

Malilipay it aton mga magsasaka para tumaas nman ang kalidad ng kanilang pamumuhay, kaya lang in the fiesta last May I invite our mayor but he did not come but I really understand nman kc nga sa kaguluhan na nangyayari sa atin. Parang martial law nga sa atin di natin malaman sino ba tlaga sila are those in govt military o anu ba tlaga we experience different. Nut mostly are they can tortured and kill.

Mabuhay kayo. Hope we can meet someday.

I don't know if I should be thankful that the RADYO NATIN Hot-Fm radio station in Catbalogan has been temporarily shut off since last Friday, July 21, 2005. It has given me the oppurtunity to keep myself busy with more other things, other than radio broadcasting. In fact, sitting down in front of a computer, like what I am doing now, is a very rare chance. However, I can't help but miss my 6:00 o"clock morning show. People already got used to listening to my light discussions on several issues affecting the lives of most Samarnons. Kasama na dun ang mga parinig and panunuligsa for most government decisions and activities which I see as frustrating and not well-focused. I feel it my responsibity to really keep everybody informed about what's going on thru that program. I have been very outright in my comments. I am just happy to note that there are people in the likes of Mano Cesar and the rest of concerned Samarnons, who really stand for what they believe and continously strive to uplift the lives of the rest of us here in Samar.

Leaving my family and my permanent government work in Pampanga, which I have served for twenty three (23) years, was a very major decision. Thanks to Mano Mito, Mano Goyo and the members of the AN SAMAR NAMAN MOVEMENT whose advocacies served as my inspiration. They were instrunmental for that decision and the final change in my directions. I welcomed my involvement and my being elected as the Secretary of the AN SAMAR NAMAN MOVEMENT, ISOG HAN SAMAR, GUGMA HAN SAMAR and lately at the SAMAR ISLAND COUNCIL FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. All my life, my membership in these organizations will never be forgotten. I haven't received financial remunerations from all these positions, but I always take pride in the thought that I have helped in the campaign for clean elections, anti-mining and anti-corruption. There are experiences which are very frustrating, but I am glad to see that people has started to be more aware of the social issues and get involved. How I wish to see empowered samarnons.

I hope to have more time to really be a part of this website. I promise to give you updates on what is going on.  My special thanks to Engr Ray Gaspay and to Mano Cesar. I am sorry if I have made the effort to be with you just now. I know you understand the constraints.
